A routine traffic stop on Friday resulted in the assault of a Rocky Mount police officer and the filing of child abuse charges.

A Rocky Mount police officer stopped a car about 4:51 p.m. Friday near the Buck Leonard Boulevard exit off U.S. 64. The officer found that the driver was providing fictitious information and asked him to step out of the car. As he did so, the driver reportedly struck the police officer, pushing him down to the ground and then fled the scene in his vehicle.

Police engaged in a brief chase of the vehicle but ended the pursuit after they realized there was a child in the vehicle. Based on information they received during the traffic stop and pursuit, Rocky Mount police worked with Nash County deputies to go to the man’s residence in Castalia, where he was arrested without incident.

Nicholas Hart, 45, was arrested and charged with resisting a police officer, assaulting a government official and misdemeanor child abuse. He was jailed under a $20,000 secured bond in the Nash County Detention Center and also being held on a parole violation.
