The Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting an upcoming event to allow the public to hear about economic development activity happening in the Twin Counties.

The session is one of three 2018 Chamber legislative series forums sponsored by Pfizer of Rocky Mount. The first forum will take place at 8 p.m. Friday at the Holiday Inn. The guest speaker at the forum will be Norris Tolson, CEO and president of the Carolinas Gateway Partnership since January 2015.

Chamber President David Farris said Tolson’s speech will include talking about potential future economic development in Nash and Edgecombe counties and providing an update on Triangle Tire Co. and Corning. The two major industry job announcements were made in December and will produce more than a combined 900 jobs in Edgecombe County.

The announcement by Chinese tire maker Triangle Tire Co. was the largest manufacturing investment in rural North Carolina and the project is estimated to contribute more than $2.4 billion to North Carolina’s economy. The company will create 800 jobs in Eastern North Carolina with an average annual salary of $56,450, while the average wage in Edgecombe County is $32,642.

Company officials said Triangle Tire will be building its first manufacturing facilities outside of China at the 1,449-acre Kingsboro megasite. A passenger tire facility will be the first phase of construction, while a commercial tire facility will be phase two. Triangle Tire Co. is expected to complete both phases by 2023. Once both facilities reach production capacity, Triangle expects to produce six million tires annually.

Corning announced it will invest $86 million to build a state-of-the-art global distribution center in Edgecombe County that will be located between Rocky Mount and Tarboro at the intersection of Dunbar Road and U.S. 64 Alternate near Midlake Mobile Home Park. The company plans to create 111 new jobs in Edgecombe County, while paying an average salary of $33,771.

The Chamber will have additional forums on July 12 and Sept. 13 at Holiday Inn. Tickets for the events are $15 for Chamber members and $20 for prospective members.

Tickets can be ordered through the Chamber website’s events calendar at RockyMountChamber.org or by calling 252-973-1211.
