TUESDAY'S PLAYOFF ROUNDUP: Northern Nash escapes upset

No. 2 seed Northern Nash fought off No. 31 seed Clayton Cleveland for a 72-68 victory in Tuesday’s opening round. The Knights will play Fayetteville Westover at 7 p.m. in Thursday’s second round. See Thursday’s edition for a preview and look back at the Knights’ tough opening game. 

North Edgecombe boys 

N.E.’s season came to a close with a 98-81 loss at Northside-Pinetown on Tuesday night. The Warriors finished with an 11-10 record. 

Tarboro boys 

Tarboro earned a 90-80 win at Roxboro Community School. The Vikings (13-9) will play No. 3 Pamlico County in the second round on Thursday. 

Nash Central girls 

The Nash Central girls’s basketball team defeated Bunn, 60-59, in overtime. The No. 17 Bulldogs (14-11) will travel top-seeded Kinston on Thursday. 

Rocky Mount girls 

The Rocky Mount girls’ basketball team lost, 62-35, on Tuesday at Wilmington New Hanover. The Gryphons’ season ends at 13-11. 

Rocky Mount Prep girls

The Jaguars lost 59-34 in 1-A action. The Jaguars finished at 7-11. 

SouthWest Edgecombe girls 

The S.W.E. girls’ basketball team defeated Croatan, 50-38 on Tuesday. The 22-seeded Cougars (13-9) move on to the second round Thursday in Yanceyville.
