No. 9 seed J.H. Rose outlasted No. 24 Southern Nash behind a 24-point performance by Creighton Lebo and 21 points from Keonte Goodman.
The Rampants (19-8) will travel to No. 8 Terry Sanford on Thursday for a second-round matchup.
Rose knocked down 11 3-pointers on the night, but it wasn't until a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter that it was able to earn some breathing room. Southern Nash didn't close within six points after that.
“It’s a game of runs and we thought if we just kept playing defense, because they shoot the ball very, very well, and it was just a game of chess,” JHR head coach James Rankins said. “I think we shot the ball well and we were able to outlast them at the end, because they’re a very good team.”
Tymize Barnhill added 13 points for JHR, which bounced back from a 50-point loss to South Central in Friday's ECC 3-A/4-A tournament championship game.
The Rampants set the tone early in the first quarter with a 12-4 run that forced a SN timeout. Lebo scored nine of those 12 points in the first four minutes.
